Engineering Underground Infrastructure with Global Responsibility
The ITA World Tunnel Congress 2027 will address a comprehensive range of topics that reflect the state of the art in underground construction and the broader role of tunnelling in sustainable development. In alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these themes highlight the sector’s contribution to resilient infrastructure, sustainable cities, and innovative engineering solutions.
T1 & T2
Immersed tunnels (WG11) and Complex geometries, including shafts and ramps (WG23): delivering complex infrastructure to meet urban and transport needs (SDG 9, SDG 11).
T3 & T4
Immersed tunnels (WG11) and Complex geometries, including shafts and ramps (WG23): delivering complex infrastructure to meet urban and transport needs (SDG 9, SDG 11).
T5 & T6
Investigations and ground characterization and Instrumentation and monitoring: strengthening resilience and safety in underground projects (SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 13).
T7
Sustainable & resilient underground construction (WG15): promoting resource efficiency and climate adaptation in line with SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 12, SDG 13.
T8
Urban underground development and innovative use of underground spaces (WG20+ITACUS): integrating underground solutions into sustainable urban development (SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 13).
T9
Safety & risk mitigation (WG5): ensuring safe environments for workers and communities (SDG 3, SDG 9, SDG 11).
T10
Operation, inspection, monitoring and refurbishments (WG6+Z1): extending the service life of infrastructure through innovation and responsible asset management (SDG 9, SDG 11, SDG 12).
T11
Digital transformation & smart tunneling solutions (WG2+WG22): fostering innovation, data-driven design, and efficient construction (SDG 9, SDG 11).
T12
Economic viability: financing, cost optimization, and long-term value (WG3): securing sustainable growth and long-term benefits for society (SDG 8, SDG 9, SDG 11).
Collectively, these topics underline how tunnelling and underground space development go beyond engineering excellence. They form a vital part of achieving the SDGs by enabling sustainable infrastructure, safer cities, and resilient societies. Relevant UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
